Jen's defense is looking good
by Jordan Fithian / August 24, 2009
We have now been living in Germany for a month. We still have no jobs and I have no team but things are going well. We have been working for Jen's coach, helping him close a store. We have been working 12-hour days in the hot non-air-conditioned store, but it is good money and our only source of income at the moment, so it's good.
Jen's team has been working hard for the past couple of weeks. Weekends they usually have a scrimmage or two and they practice the morning of the days they do. They practice every weeknight but Monday and they usually go for 2 hours. A half-hour to an hour of warm up and conditioning and then an hour of handball, learning plays, shooting and working on defense. Jen and her coaches are really pleased with her defense; her intensity and physical style of play is fun to watch. She is constantly working on her offense and she continues to improve.
I had a small set back last week in my handball career; while working for Jen's coach I somehow managed to drop a 50 pound box on my Achilles, putting a sizable gash in it that required six stitches. The doctor said that everything looked good but he will not clear me to participate in athletics until Monday, when he will take the stitches out. So, the training session I was supposed to have today with ESV Weil was postponed until Monday night. ESV Weil is team located about 15 minutes from Grenzach and would be a perfect fit for me. They play in the fourth league in Germany and one of the coaches happens to be friends with Jen's coach so we have a connection. I hope there is a fit and that it works out; it would solve one of our bigger problems and would be great for me from a handball standpoint.
Jen has a busy weekend; they travel to Switzerland tomorrow to scrimmage the Swiss champs from last year. They than have a double session of practices on Saturday before another scrimmage Sat night. On Sunday they have a practice in the morning and than perhaps a pool workout planned for the afternoon.
It’s getting late here, time for bed for us. I have to get up early to work with Jen's coach again and Jen has a small gig at an apartment complex. Peace out, cub scouts.
