Surprise Visit from Olympian Harry Winkler at Palm Beach Gardens Clinic

by Dominique Dumont / July 27, 2009

We couldn't ask for a better start in Palm Beach County. Coach Jim Thome headed up a beginner's clinic at the Palm Beach Gardens Rec Center this morning. Parents, kids and local athletes showed up to enjoy two hours of first class training in a top notch setting.

Just when the day couldn't get any better, in walks Coach Thome's big surprise, a visit from Olympian Harry Winkler! Mr. Winkler was a member of the 1972 and 1976 USA Men's Handball Teams and coach of the 1984 USA Women's Handball Team. Details on Mr. Winkler's Olympic experiences can be found at Harry Winkler. Needless to say, everyone thought this was "a-w-e-s-o-m-e" and having a first introduction to handball with such a duo was truly memorable for all. Thanks Jim and Harry for a great first day!

The clinics resume tomorrow and both gentlemen have agreed to lead the way. Athletes apparently vowed to go home and call their friends to encourage them to attend tomorrow's session. The sessions will last the summer and given a good turnout, a county team will be fielded to participate in the Southeast league. Mr. Winkler who resides in Palm Beach Gardens has even offered to help USATH at future local clinics and team practices. Now, wouldn't this be fun, Orlando based Coach Thome and his UCF men's team possibly playing against Harry's Palm Beach team? Who knows, we'll just have to stay tuned!

All in all, another great day in paradise. Next clinic is tomorrow, same place, same time - 10am! Everyone is welcome!

Special thanks to Nick Chillemi for giving an extra hand today.
