One FANTASTIC day + One Washout

by Dominique Dumont / August 03, 2009

Well here I am at the wonderful Swim and Sport club in Flanders, New Jersey. Athletes looking out the windows praying for the torential rain to stop. Thing is, yesterday was one of the best ever outdoor handball days so we still count ourselves lucky.

After discussing the situation with SSC, it was decided to cancel the day...just too many chances for injury even though some athletes were willing to play in this rain. It's unfortunate for everyone, especially the teams that came from as far as Houston, Carolina, Boston, etc. Oh well... can't have it all can we?

The girls yesterday played by beach handball rules, barefoot on the grass and had a great time. The UNC girls won first place with the Houston Stars coming in second. The men sweated it out in the heat and played regular handball rules on the grass field. Because of the rain, there are no finals so we'll just have to tally up the points and goal differentials to figure out the approximate rankings. We'll be posting game results soon.

I wanted to give special kudos to the Brendan McCorkle's Philadelphia team that drove up for their first time to play. Short of players but lots of effort was given, and I must say, some of them with excellent form. I look forward to seeing that club grow!

All in all, a fantastic weekend was provided by our gracious hosts at the Swim and Sport club. I think everyone, including athletes, families, kids and puppy dogs can say that even though we only had one day, it was a GREAT one! Even my Mom, who after 20 years of sitting on the sidelines watching me play, joined me on this trip and enjoyed the games and the fun atmosphere!
