New York Youth League - Volunteers Needed!
by Dominique Dumont / January 22, 2010
As some of you already know, our first youth league in New York City starts in a few weeks. In partnership with the New York Parks and Recreation Department, four centers will participate in a citywide program! We have Cromwell in Staten Island, Al Oerter in Queens, Chelsea in Manhattan and Sunset Park in Brooklyn participating.
Next week, I'll be going up to Staten Island where Dannette Leininger and I will be training 20 staff members from all boroughs. Apparently, they have all watched videos of our sport and are psyched to learn! Should be fun. Divine Jackson from NYAC also volunteered to come out and help me with the P&R troops. Nothing like a captive and enthusiastic audience!
Following the staff training, each center will hold Learn to Play clinics on each Saturday in February. Now, here's where I need everyone's help! Not a catch, just an opportunity to give back to our sport! Even though the P&R staff will have learned the sport, they will obviously not feel totally comfortable in teaching their centers' kids....yet! So we need 1-2 handballers to volunteer 2 hours on chosen Saturdays to come out and help teach the kids! Kids will be aged 12-17 years old so it should be balls of fun..pardon the pun.
A six week league will follow on each Saturday in March and ending on April 10th which is the media, grand finale!
How can you go wrong in donating two hours to a fantastic program which could be the groundbreaking start to New York's youth playing handball?
