LIVE from Carolina Blue Cup

by Dominique Dumont / February 27, 2010

Here at the Fetzer gym at UNC! The women's Blue Cup is off and running with 10 games already having been played. Having started at 8am this morning, the girls from Carolina, Alberta, West Point, DC, Atlanta and Boston have battled it out with great enthusiasm.

The games are going well so far, lots of spectators including some Army parents and of course the traditional pre-game iPods revving the crowds. Darrick Heath's son Finn is here too. Nine years old and keeping me busy playing catch any opportunity he can get!  His first words of the tournament, "Ugh girls, I hope they don't take me shopping!" Gotta love it. The little man is a total hoot and hopefully with another day's brainwashing we'll pull him away from loving basketball and get him to aspire to be like his dad!

In terms of handball, well it's great to see our Canadian neighbors here all the way down from Alberta.  Unfortunately for our USATH member teams, the Canucks are leading the score sheets and haven't lost one game yet. Even though we almost needed to add a row of boxes to the scoresheet just for them.  We're always up for the challenge and no one has lost faith yet! Boston, Atlanta and Carolina have each won two games a piece. DC with two tied games and Army gold plugging away.

Thanks to Referee/Boston Player, Nader Shaar, we are Live Streaming the Gym B games. Everyone is taking turns handling the webcam, getting dizzy after a while. It's a family effort and we're hoping that many will tune in to take a peek! Thanks, Nader! It was a bit of a battle at first but perseverance and Michael Mistarz' computer saved the day. Note to self: UNC computer network is secure. Forget about trying to get in.

Anyhow, tomorrow should be interesting. Not too many injuries so far which is great. Good trainers on the spot for minor sprains as needed.

Placement games start at 8 a.m. (ouch) with finals at 1:30 p.m. Watch us live!
