Thanks to Jefferson High School in Tampa

by Dominique Dumont / April 11, 2010

A big thank you to the administrators and students of Jefferson High School in Tampa! The administrators of the school, a reputed Center for International Studies, was kind enough to bring together over 200 students to their gymnasium last week and allow us and our friends from the TuS Nieder-Eschbach Club to teach them some handball.

A special thank you to Ms Holly Frazier, Asst Principal for Magnet Curriculum and Bryant Johnson, Coach of the Tampa Green Wave for coordinating the on-site effort.

It was really a great experience to have the German club involved, the kids loved it and it looks like we'll easily have enough interested students to field two teams next season.

At first, I was hesitant to even ask the German club if they would consider doing this for us. Then I thought, oh well, I'll just ask and the worst they can say is no. Let's face it, playing a game is one thing but giving a clinic in a foreign country is another. Considering they had driven to Tampa to play our local Club just a few days before, I didn't want to push it either. After all, these young athletes were on vacation. BUT, Bryant and I were very happy to hear their response, a big "OF COURSE, WE'D LOVE TO"! In fact, they were really excited and made the drive from their hotel in Orlando to come spend most of the day at the school. They received a warm welcome by all the students and administrators, a tour of the school and were even invited to have lunch with the students. Afterwards, a long demonstration and interactive clinic for the students. A fantastic day for everyone.

It's certainly an experience to be repeated in more schools across the country. There really is nothing greater than a few hours of our time and exposing 200+ students to our great sport in one day!

Thank you Bryant, Jefferson High School and TuS Nieder-Eschbach Handball Club!
