32 Teams in Action at West Point

by Dominique Dumont / August 30, 2010

Recognize any of these teams?  The Barbarians, Guppies, Dragons, Root Hawgs, Elvis Lives, Brew Dogs?  These are just a few of the 32 teams participating in West Point's new intramural handball program!

This IM program was rekindled by Major Adam Hodges and all cadets are excited to get the battle started!  Marching orders have been given, matches start this week, twice a week throughout the whole school year.  The format is pretty cool too.  The Brigade schedule is listed online at http://wpteamhandball.wetpaint.com/page/Company+Athletics for those who are interested in following.

Four Regiments have been named, each include 2 battalions, 8 teams.  The rules of the game have been slightly modified to accommodate schedules and league objectives. Examples of modified rules are: 4 players + 1 goalie on the court instead of 6+1.  Halves are 20 minutes without any stop time, even during time outs. For those of you interested in starting your own program, note that our Technical Director is always available for consultation to determine what competition format  is best for your situation.

As a pre-cursor to the start, one week of coaching and refereeing clinics were given on site at the Arvin gymnasium. An absolute fantastic form of preparation and  invaluable help to the handball community.  Most referees and coaches are volunteers who are current club players; club players are not allowed to play in this intramural program. Essentially, this gives experienced players a chance to experience being a referee or a coach and the inexperienced cadets gain the opportunity to learn from them and play amongst athletes of the same level.

As usual, well done Major Hodges. Even after passing the Club reigns to Major Tilton, we knew you couldn't leave the handball world! We're overwhelmed with excitement about your IM program and look forward to receiving highlights from the battlefield.

To those interested in getting handball in your college IM program, e-mail me at  dominique@usateamhandball.org. I'm thrilled to help athletes reach out to your Recreation departments and get programs launched!
