Executing a Summer and Planning the Fall
by Patric Coggin / July 02, 2009
The oppressive summer heat has reached us early this year, but it hasn't dampened the spirits of our youth handballers within the Texas Team Handball Youth League. With a lack of indoor facilities at many of the Boys and Girls Clubs, we have braved (the morning) sun and made significant progress in coaching handball to many of the youth in the area.
July 20th-23rd will hold four days of competition for boys and girls from the Texas cities of Bryan, College Station, Georgetown and Huntsville. The games will all take place in the (air conditioned) indoor gym at the Brazos Valley Boys and Girls Club in Bryan, Texas.
Thanks to the generous sponsorship of BMI Defense Systems, all children participating in this season's league will receive T-shirts, and those winning each the boys and the girls competitions will receive medals. As an added bonus, those medals will be presented by a U.S. Team Handball Olympian.
In the DFW area, Dee Miller has started an Olympic Athlete Development program. Working closely with area coaches and parents, she is actively recruiting U17 athletes and inspiring them to learn handball along with their more "traditional" sports. Her website will be available soon at Click here to visit
While we may be busy executing a full summer, fall is just around the corner. With fall comes cooler temperatures and returning college students. We are already in discussions with multiple colleges in order to meet our goal of executing FIVE college clinics this fall alone. We do this in hopes of having a viable 3+ team Texas Collegiate League running by the Spring. In addition to the already-active Texas A&M team, our regional coach Boban Zivovic is working closely with the University of Houston to restart that program. Finally, we have received some interest in starting programs at Southwestern University and at Texas State.
This is just part of the exciting developments taking place here in our region. Please keep checking back- I hope to have our plans for Houston development ready for publication soon! Everyone stay cool out there, and remember there is always someone out there who is ready to fall in love with our sport today!
