Americans in Europe - Weekend of Nov. 20-21

by Steve Pastorino / November 24, 2009

USA Team Handball tracks the play of American handballers in Europe on a regular basis.

KEITH FINE / TSV Bayer Dormagen / Regionaliga West (3rd Division)

The youngest team in the Regionaliga continues to struggle, but USA keeper Keith Fine also is getting immense amounts of experience.  TSV Dormagen lost 46-31 (19:15) at TuS Ferndorf, keeping it close through halftime before faltering down the stretch.

JORDAN FITHIAN / ESV Weil / Sudbadenliga (5th Division)

Fithian's Weil squad won its fifth consecutive game, with Fithian earning significant playing time and scoring two goals.  Weil rolled 28-24 (14-11) over HSG Freiburg in a tight back-and-forth affair.

GARY HINES / DJK Waldbuttelbrunn / Oberliga Bayern (4th Division)

Gary Hines continues to make an argument for MVP honors as he poured in 11 goals for DJK in a come-from-behind win over rival TSV Rodelsee.  DJK trailed 15-14 at halftime, but rallied to win 28-24.

MARK ORTEGA / Pulheimer SC / Oberliga Mittelrhein (4th division)

Ortega's defense was once again singled out by German media, as his intensity helped rally Pulheimer SC from a deficit.  In the end, TuS 82 Opladen prevailed 31:30, despite two goals from Ortega.  Pulhleimer sits 8th in the 14-team league, with a date with league leaders VfL Gummersbach II on tap for next weekend.

HANS SELF / SG Bruchkobel / Oberliga Hessen (4th division)

Born in Camp Pendleton, California, Self is the latest German-American to identify himself to USA Team Handball.  The 22-year-old has previously played for the junior team of SG Wallau Massenheim (formerly of the 1st Bundesliga), winning one Oberliga title and a championship in a Europe-wide youth competition in Spain.  He was also the youngest player in Regionaliga four years ago. This past Sunday, SG Bruchkobel fell 25:35 to TuS Holzheim.  Self had one goal.  Bruchkobel sits 12th in the 14-team Oberliga Hessen.

JENNIFER HAUBRICH / TV Grenzach / Regionaliga Sud (3rd division)

Reports indicate that TV Grenzach missed Jen Haubrich's presence, as she missed thee game due to her call up to the USA Junior Women's team in Poland.  However, Grenzach prevailed 29:27 (17:11) at home against TS Ottersweier, pulling Grenzach into a ninth-place tie with their opponents.  Two points are on the horizon next Sunday, as they face bottom dwellers TSG Ketsch 2.

PATRICK OLIVER / HSG Pohlheim / Regionaliga Sudwest is still not cleared to play by the German Handball Federation.

CHRISTOPHER KOERNER / SC Kronau - Ostringen (RNL II) / Regionaliga Sud (3rd division) did not play.

JULIA SAYER / TSV Hahlen / Oberliga Westfalen (4th division) did not play due to callup to USA Women's Team in Poland.
