USATH takes message to Barbados

USA Team Handball November 25, 2009

USA Team Handball's East Regional Director Dominique Dumont will hit the road this Thanksgiving weekend for the sun and sand of Barbados.

Dumont will spend the weekend in Barbados as guest of the Handball Association of Barbados. Arriving in Georgetown, Barbados on Friday, Dumont will lead a three-day introductory handball course for coaches, administrators and players from Barbados, St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, Grenada and St. Kitts & Nevis. Barbados, Trinidad & St. Kitts are IHF members, while Grenada and St. Lucia are marching towards recognition from Basel, Switzerland in the next year.

The course was conceived as a way to accelerate handball development in the English-speaking Caribbean, and full credit goes to Dr. Llew Harper, president of Barbados Handball, for organizing and hosting the event.

During her stay, Dumont will focus on four core objectives:

- Teaching the fundamentals of executing basic indoor handball training sessions, including court marking, player positions, rules, drills, etc.
- Offering advice how to teach handball in the schools
- Sharing information about the structure of handball in the USA and identify best practices for the island nations and areas of future cooperation
- Introducing beach handball as a developmental tool for Caribbean handball

Dumont will also offer a formal invitation to all five countries to send youth (U18) teams to the 2010 Florida Cup in Kissimmee/Orlando.
