NYC THC triumphs in West Point

New York City THC was the last team standing on Sunday, taking home the 33rd West Point Invitational title. NYC defeated Chicago Inter, 14-9 (2-4), in a 2x20 defensive struggle dominated by great goalie play from both teams.

Quebec's Levis (the Canadian champions) beat the Alberta Senior regional team for third place.  West Point Black defended its home court with a 28-15 win over UNC in the 5th place game.

A spirited Saturday of competition featured more than 20 games in three gyms from dawn to well after dusk.  Levis secured a berth in the semifinals with wins over the USA Select team (28-17), Alberta Juniors (31-17) and West Point Black (27-21).  They'll meet Chicago Inter, which defeated New England (24-17), West Point Gold (28-16) and West Point Black (24-20), their only blemish coming in a 22-24 defeat to New York City.

NYC continued an undefeated streak with wins over West Point Black, New England and Chicago.  Alberta's Senior regional team defeated NYAC, Carolina THC and Air Force.

In placement games played on Saturday night, NYAC defeated New England for 7th place, 22-18.  Air Force beat USA Select 28-18 for 9th place, and the Alberta Junior team defeated West Point Gold, 31-28 for 11th place.

The USA Select team was paced by Brian Walsh, who returned to handball after a nearly 8-month layoff to top the squad with 24 goals (through three games) including nine against his alma mater, West Point, and 11 more against the Alberta Juniors. .  Walsh is slated to head to Germany with the Army World Class Athlete Program in the next month.  Trevor Williams (2 goals) and Brian Lucas (6 goals) tuned up their games before departing for Germany next week with WCAP.  Atlanta Team Handball's Gil Bozeman notched eight goals.  Teens Marko Dumlija and John Bellard added six goals apiece, while Devin Holman scored four.  Hesham Nadim, Daniel Osborne, Ross Miner and Jared Cooper all got on the scoreboard for the USA as well.
