Germany Makes Plans for Chicago
January 30, 2010
Semifinal Saturday in Vienna feature no real suprises, but three very different games. In the late morning opener, the lack of interest in 5th place was evident as Spain lost by seven goals to relentless Denmark.
The action picked up dramatically when France and Iceland took the floor for the day's second match. A neck-and-neck game gave way to a burst of French scoring to start the second half, and Iceland melted. France ran away with a 36-28 win, with Nicola Karabatic leading the way with nine goals.
The third game of the day featured a packed house about 3/4 in favor of Croatia. Despite being unable to put Poland away until the game's final minute, Croatia was the superior team, ekeing out a 24-21 win. Nine different players from Croatia scored, and the MVP of the game was goalkeeper Mirko Alilovic.
Meantime in the paper today, Germany National Team coach Heiner Brandt looked ahead to an extra week of National Team training in Chicago in July.
