The "Sri Lanka National Handball Team" in the movie Machan.

Last week, we highlighted the handball scene from The Reader but Machan, a film from Usberto Pasolini, the producer of The Full Monty, goes one step further as its plot centers around handball.

The basic synopsis of Machan is that a bunch of Sri Lankan peasants are desperately seeking a way to go to the West and live a better life. After receiving rejection upon rejection for a visa, one of the men discovers an international handball tournament in Bavaria, Germany.

Seeing this as his ticket out of Sri Lanka, the man assembles a cast of misfits who form the unofficial Sri Lanka national team.  Of course, hijinks follow as the crew does whatever it can to raise funds and an invitation for the tournament despite not having a clue of what the game entails.

We will not spoil the rest of the movie for you so we would advise that you search meticuously for the DVD which can sometimes be found on Amazon or its British's equivilent Amazon.co.uk

Unfortunately, the film never saw a proper worldwide release; however, it received praise at several major international film festivals and has garnered a 7.3/10 from 338 user reviews on IMDB.com
